Nurse attacked leaving McKellar Centre

A Barwon Health worker has been attacked by an armed man while leaving work in North Geelong.

A staff member has been attacked leaving Barwon Health’s McKellar Centre.

A Barwon Health employee was attacked by a man wielding a piece of metal as she left work in North Geelong.

A “code black” – which involves an armed personal threat – was called at the McKellar Centre on Tuesday night after the woman was assaulted, Barwon Health spokeswoman Kate Bibby said.

It is believed the victim was a nurse at the centre.

Police said the woman was attacked and her car was damaged by a man with a metal sign just after 5pm.

“The staff member received treatment in the emergency department and the matter has been reported to police,” Ms Bibby said.

“The safety and security of patients, staff and visitors is of utmost importance to us.

“We recognise this event will have been distressing for all involved and we are providing support to staff affected through our usual channels, including the employee assistance program.”

Ms Bibby said everyone had a right to feel safe in their workplace.

“Violence and aggression against our staff is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” she said.

The McKellar Centre, on Ballarat Rd, offers a range of aged care services, inpatient and community rehabilitation clinics, and community health and palliative care services.

Victoria Police spokesman First Constable Paul Hogan said the incident took place at the intersection of Ballarat Rd and Stoddard St about 5.15pm Tuesday.

“The woman suffered minor injuries,” he said.

“The investigation remains ongoing.”

As of Wednesday afternoon, police were yet to establish if the parties were known to each other.

The nurses’ union has been contacted for comment.
