An independent analysis of newly released 2022 NAPLAN results has revealed the Geelong schools that performed the best in the Year 5 and Year 9 tests.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a series of tests of basic skills given to Australian students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9.

Geelong Grammar’s junior cohort was found to have performed the best in the 2022 series of tests, compared to the region’s other primary schools.

To determine how each school performed in 2022, the scores for all five test subjects for the student cohort – year 5 or year 9 – were combined and the average calculated.

Special schools, schools with fewer than 20 students enrolled, and schools that did not report any results for NAPLAN subjects were excluded from the analysis.

The figures were independently compiled from the federal government’s MySchool website.

The Corio private school scored an average of 535.2 across the five test subjects.

Government school Chilwell Primary wasn’t far behind, achieving the second best results in the region with a score of 533.6.

Fyans Park Primary School, which is also a government school, was the third best performer with an average score of 528.4.

Chilwell Primary assistant principal Sarah Jeffreys said the school focused on “the whole child”, supporting academic learning and wellbeing.

“We are proud of our grade 5s as they tried their best, their results were fantastic but mostly for their positive approach towards the NAPLAN assessment,” she said.

“NAPLAN can be used as many indicators of learning and progress, however, we need to be mindful this is a snapshot of learning on one day.

“This data and these results need to be aligned to other assessment and measures to monitor student progress.”

Ms Jeffreys said her school focused on making great students and great people within the community in the future.

The top performing secondary school was Kardinia International College with the average result of 622.8.

Principal Catherine Lockhart said the school was delighted with the results.

“It’s testament to our excellent teaching staff and our students who are engaged in learning and I congratulate them both on our excellent results,” Mrs Lockhart said.

“NAPLAN is one of a number of tools we use to inform us of a student’s academic growth and development at any point in time.

“We actively encourage our students to develop their social, personal, intercultural, critical thinking, and ethical skills and attributes that enable and inspire them to actively contribute to a more inclusive, respectful and peaceful, and sustainable world.”

Geelong Grammar also performed well in the secondary schools assessment, achieving an average score of 605.8.

The Geelong College in Newtown was the third best with an average score of 604.6.
