A popular Torquay sandwich and coffee shop is looking to expand, with extended opening hours, alfresco dining and live events on the horizon.

Space Cake Pty Ltd, which trades as Mavis Mavis, has lodged an application with Surf Coast Shire Council for a cafe/restaurant liquor licence.

The centrepiece of the bid is a plan to serve food and drinks late into the evening over summer.

“We are proposing we run an evening dinner service with food and basic alcoholic beverages during peak seasons, this will be a sit down dining and casual bar style experience, then adjusting accordingly to a few nights a week during off peaks seasons,” the application stated.

Mavis Mavis opened in January 2020 and has become a popular destination for coffee lovers and sandwich connoisseurs alike.

In its application, the cafe proposed to continue using retro mismatched dining chairs and couches on the street outside the building under an alfresco dining permit, as it “creates a more immersive experience and contributes to the overall atmosphere which makes Mavis Mavis what it is”.

It could soon play host to live entertainment as well, on a more permanent basis than before.

“We are also proposing that we hold one off events with ‘live’ entertainment speciality nights every quarter during the year,” the application states.

The roster would include “local artists and bands” the cafe has hosted previously under temporary liquor licenses.

“These are great attractions and the local community have shown a great appreciation for these events and we very much enjoy holding these events,” the application stated.

The Gilbert St cafe currently trades from 7am to 2.30pm, however these hours would expand.

Under the application, alcohol would be served between 10am-11pm Monday to Thursday and Sunday, and 10am to 1am on Friday and Saturday.

On public holidays the hours would be from 10am to midnight.

According to documents lodged with the shire, Mavis Mavis can comfortably seat 69 patrons, with a maximum of 100 patrons proposed for peak events or standing-room situations, although the technical capacity of the space is higher.

The application noted that other businesses in central Torquay operated under similar conditions, such as the Torquay Hotel or Growlers Torquay.

Cafe operators will work with the shire and Victoria Police to “manage and mitigate” any cumulative impacts, the documents state.
