A Corio dad who stabbed a man in the back with a spear on Halloween was also caught with ice after stealing a car.

Marcus Kane Grogan, 48, fronted the Geelong Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday and was

sentenced to seven months behind bars.

He previously pleaded guilty to eight charges, including intentionally causing injury, theft of a motor vehicle, driving while disqualified, possessing ice and shoplifting.

According to court documents, Grogan and the victim got into an argument at his home in the early hours of October 31 last year.

The father of two went to his room and retrieved an “Aboriginal spear” with a 30cm flat blade – “sharp on both sides”.

Grogan’s victim went to leave after Grogan yelled at him to get out of the house.

As he walked away, Grogan stabbed him in the back, in the kidney area of the right-hand side of his back.

The resulting wound was “bleeding heavily” and required stitches after the man was rushed to hospital.

When interviewed by police, Grogan denied owning the spear and said the man “must have done it to himself”.

In a statement the victim, who was in the courtroom, said he now suffered from severe anxiety and he was unable to use his left hand after the incident.

He said he has trouble sleeping and didn’t feel safe in his own home anymore.

He said he has also been impacted financially as he had been left unable to work.

Prior to the incident, Grogan and a female co-accused shoplifted from APCO North Geelong in August last year, while a month earlier he stole a car and was found with ice.

Grogan was also caught nicking $310 of Adidas shirts from Myer in Westfield in November last year.

Grogan’s lawyer, Manny Nicolosi, asked magistrate Peter Mellas to defer sentencing for some of the charges and bring Grogan back before the court to see if he needed to spend some time in custody.

“If he’s not doing the right thing, he has the sword over his head for potential (time in) jail,” Mr Nicolosi said.

However, Mr Mellas said there was “no alternative but prison” over the assault when handing down his sentence.

The victim held his head in his hands and was visibly upset as Mr Mellas handed down his

sentence.

Grogan was supported by his father in court.

The pair embraced and Grogan took off all his jewellery, including his watch and

multiple rings, before he was taken into custody.

Upon his release from jail, Grogan will be placed onto a 15 month community corrections order.
