A neighbour has described the distressing scene after finding a woman – bloody and scared – on a Grovedale footpath early on New Year’s Day.
Torquay Rd resident Kate, who didn’t want her surname used, recalled the “terrifying” moment she returned from a late night shift to find the 35-year-old woman bloodied and screaming for help.
Kate found the woman on her nature strip, wearing pink pyjamas and with what she described as a “10 cm cut” on her head.
“She was so scared,” she said.
“My boss dropped us off and she was standing there … she had a broken head.
“Blood was all on her face.”
It’s alleged the woman was assaulted at her Torquay Rd home when a man broke into her house before stealing her car.
Victoria Police spokeswoman Leonie Johnson said emergency services were called to Torquay Rd about 3.15am on Monday.
Kate said the woman told her the man bludgeoned her with a bat.
“He was holding a bat, so she fight (sic) him with a curtain,” she said.
“She said if she didn’t have the curtain she maybe could be not alive.”
Kate instantly alerted the authorities upon making the “scary” discovery.
Ms Johnson said the woman managed to escape from the property and was taken to hospital.
A pair of forensics vans arrived on scene at the Torquay Rd property about 9.30am with the home declared a crime scene by 10am.
Later, police taped off a house at Dunwinnie Crt where the allegedly stolen car was found along with it’s driver.
Bodhi Edwards, who lives in the court, was asleep with his partner when he was woken by a series of “big bangs”.
He said he walked out and saw the man behind the wheel.
“He reversed out, at first I thought he was going to do a runner, and just leg it, and he’s just sent it down the driveway next door and smashed it up,” he said.
Mr Edwards said shortly after the driver noticed him, he attempted to introduce himself.
“I walked out and said ‘oi’ and he’s come up to me and introduced himself saying he knows the lady who lives there, which he doesn’t,” Mr Edwards said.
“He was saying ‘let me shake your hand, let me shake your hand’.”
Mr Edwards said after getting back in the car and smashing into the roller door, the driver begun “revving the car” and blasting music.
The man was arrested out the front of the house the car crashed into.
By late Monday the Ms Johnson said the man was assisting police with their inquiries.
In a separate incident, police arrested a man following an alleged stabbing in Newtown about 9.50pm on Sunday.
It is alleged a man stabbed two men at the intersection of Mervyn and Stanley streets.
One of the men was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The other man sustained minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment.
A 27-year-old Newtown man was arrested at the scene.
Ms Johnson said the man was also assisting police with their inquiries.
