A guard inside Barwon Prison was assaulted by a prisoner and hospitalised after another violent incident at the maximum-security jail.
A police investigation is underway into the alleged attack at the Lara facility, near Geelong, on Friday.
The 45-year-old prison officer was treated at the Geelong hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
A Department of Justice and Community Safety spokeswoman said the prison, on Bacchus Marsh Rd, was taking the assault “very seriously”.
It’s believed a number of staff were involved in the incident inside one unit.
“The matter was quickly resolved, however one prison officer is currently receiving treatment at hospital,” the spokeswoman said.
“We take all violence very seriously and refer all allegations of criminal activity and serious incidents to Victoria Police for investigation.”
It’s believed the prisoner responsible is facing “significant consequences” including extra time in jail.
A police spokesman said they believed the guard was assaulted at about 12.10pm on Friday.
“Investigations remain ongoing,” he said.
Paramedics were called to the facility after midday, with an Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman saying the man was rushed to hospital by road.
It’s still unclear if a weapon was used in the assault.
The incident follows a number of recent attacks at the prison, home to some of the country’s most violent criminals including killers, bikies, gangland figures and high-level drug traffickers.
Some of its most despised inmates include murderer and rapists Adrian Bailey and Sean Price, child killer Arthur Freeman and Hoddle Street mass murderer Julian Knight.
