A Geelong psychic medium who won a TV game show will spend her prize money on ghost hunting equipment to explore “haunted” places around the world.
Leopold’s La Toya Buultjens won $14,000 on Channel 10’s Deal or No Deal, hosted by Grant Denyer, on Tuesday night.
The mother of three said she had a dream about her time on the show a week before her appearance and knew she would win.
“I knew what case I was to choose and I knew how much was going to be in that case and surely enough I was correct,” Ms Buultjens.
Unique work runs in the family — Ms Buultjens’ husband Liam works as a mortician.
“He likes his people dead and quiet and I like my people dead and talkative,” she said.
“He has accidentally brought a few ghosts home with him.”
Ms Buultjens said she dismissed her visions when she was young and thought they were her overactive imagination.
It wasn’t until Ms Buultjens was in her 20s that she discovered her gifts when a fellow psychic medium showed her that a woman she was seeing was in fact a spirit.
“I was shocked,” she said.
“I couldn’t help and think how many dead people I have acknowledged or been talking to for all these years, and not have known that they are in spirit.”
Ms Buultjens believes everybody is born with psychic abilities and it’s whether you’re aware enough to tune into it before life pushes it away.
“A medium takes a lot of dedication to build that connection and even when you have a connection it’s not always like you see on TV,” she said.
“We don’t all see the other side the same.
“Some are really visual, some are audio and for some it may just be like a story playing in their mind’s eye.”
