An Anglesea venue started by a local general practitioner with a passion for music is bringing international artists to the town’s humble town hall.
Dr David Corbet had been jokingly tweeting his favourite international musician Joan As Police Woman, asking her to come to Anglesea, when the idea for The Sound Doctor was born, venue committee member Andi Lawson-Moore said.
When the international artist unexpectedly said yes, Dr Corbet came to Ms Lawson-Moore and other locals who were passionate about music and worked in events, and asked for help.
Since 2017 The Sound Doctor has been bringing established, often-international, artists to perform at the Anglesea Memorial Hall including Didirri,Mia Dyson, Cable Ties, Mia Wray, Augie March and Lisa Mitchell.
“It took two years to finally get (Joan As Police Woman) here in 2019, but we made it happen,” she said.
The small Surf Coast venue is run by a team of music-loving local volunteers who all work day jobs.
The Sound Doctor has been nominated for a prestigious 2024 Music Victoria Award in the best regional venue/presenter (under 50 gigs across the year).
It is up against iconic Bellarine venue The Blues Train.
The Barwon Club Hotel and Torquay Hotel are nominated for the same award in the over 50 gigs category.
Geelong artist Baraka The Kid has been nominated for best regional act and best hip hop work.
Beyond the Valley and Queenscliff Music Festival are both up for best regional festival.
Category winners will be announced at the Music Victoria Awards ceremony on Thursday 24 October in Melbourne.
