People driving through Waurn Ponds on Hams and Ghazeepore Rd will face delays as construction of a roundabout gets underway.

Drivers heading through Waurn Ponds could face lengthy delays, as a major road is closed to traffic for at least three months.

Winslow Constructors late last month began builing a roundabout at the intersection of Hams and Ghazeepore roads, with road closures expected “for an extended period”.

The works will aim to increase safety and allow a smoother flow of traffic.

The construction is located nearby to Waurn Ponds train station and the Geelong Ring Rd, as well as the controversial site of a proposed residential village.

The 195-house residential village development was met with more than 150 objections last year, and would be bordered by Hams Rd, Baanip Blvd and the Geelong Ring Rd.

The roundabout works will be delivered in two phases.

In a notification letter sent to affected residents, project manager Roshan Shetty said the construction of the roundabout would be split into two phases, starting with the west side and continuing to the eastern side of Ghazeepore Rd.

“The first phase of works will … see the closure of the north bound lane of Ghazeepore Rd and will only be opened for local traffic for an extended period,” he said.

“The southbound lane will be operational as normal under roadwork conditions, with detours in place on Baanip Blvd and Sugargum Dr.”

Mr Shetty said works were expected to be completed by the end of October, 2023.

He said this would allow for the reopening of both roads to two-way traffic.

“(We) are kindly requesting your ongoing valued patience and understanding of this updated timeline required to provide the best design and constructability outcome of the road upgrade to all affected parties and stakeholders,” Mr Shetty said.

“(We) look forward to being able to provide you with a new and improved Hams Rd/Ghazeepore Rd network in the very near future.”

Mr Shetty said the company would provide a further update when the second phase of construction begins.
