The train driver and conductor involved in a railway death between Little River and Werribee will be offered psychological support following the grim tragedy.

Emergency services rushed to the scene just after midnight on Saturday after a person was killed at Manor Junction, between Wyndham Vale and Little River stations.

Shocked commuters on a Geelong-bound V/Line service from Melbourne reported seeing staff and police searching the train line with torches.

Ambulance Victoria, Fire Rescue Victoria and Victoria Police units all responded.

“We thank passengers for their patience as we worked to get them to their destination as quickly and safely as possible following an emergency services incident at Manor Junction early this morning, “ a V/Line spokesman said.

“We are offering our full support to the train driver and conductor involved in the incident.”

One passenger, who did not want to be named, said staff had also offered support to traumatised passengers, who sat idle on the train for up to an hour waiting for paramedics to clear the scene.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman told the Geelong Advertiser the person was “struck and killed by a train at Werribee” and an investigation is underway.

The death is not being treated as suspicious “at this early stage.”

“Police will prepare a report for the coroner,” she said.

Coaches replaced trains on the Geelong Line early this morning after the person was struck.

The 103 passengers on board the 11.10pm service to Waurn Ponds were supported by V/Line staff before being helped off the train.

The two remaining Geelong Line services for the night were cancelled and replaced by coaches.

The incident has been referred to the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR), who are expected to investigate.

Normal services resumed without disruption on Saturday morning.
