Emergency services respond to significant fire on Pigdon St in Portarlington

Paramedics remain at the scene of a fire sparked on a large Portarlington property on Tuesday.

Emergency services have responded to a significant blaze in Portarlington.

A community warning was issued for residents in the Bellarine Peninsula town on Tuesday afternoon after a shed on a large property caught fire about 1.10pm.

Seven vehicles from the Country Fire Authority arrived at the Pigdon St address.

Police and paramedics were also on scene.

By 2.20pm the incident was listed as under control.

Earlier, flames could be seen licking from the structure and smoke had been highly visible in the area this afternoon, prompting a Victoria Emergency alert for nearby roads.

A CFA spokesman said there was no immediate threat to the community with more than a dozen firefighters remaining at the metal shed.

Some were being hosed down with water after exiting the structure.

Several items, including a bath tub, appeared to have been damaged.

It’s understood no injuries have been reported and an investigation is ongoing.

A Victoria Police spokesman said the fire was not being treated as suspicious.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said paramedics would remain at the property “for health monitoring”.

The scare comes after a major fire ripped through a much-loved pizza shop in February.

Pier Front Pizzeria, located on Newcombe St, was completely gutted and destroyed following the incident, devastating the local community.

Owner John Geracitano, who had been running the restaurant for six years, said he received a call in the early hours reporting smoke billowing out of the windows.

“There was nothing left,” he said at the time.

The Portarlington shop remains closed.
