Dog allegedly shot at North Shore in disturbing incident

The owner of a dog allegedly shot at North Shore has detailed the suspicious behaviour of two men who attempted to lure two dogs, before a ‘bang’ led to Bluey dropping to the ground.

How to spot animal cruelty and report it

A dog was left fighting for its life after allegedly being shot in a North Shore field on Saturday night.

RSPCA Victoria confirmed it was investigating the alleged incident after inspectors received a “cruelty report”.

Corio man Josh Seiler said he took his two dogs to a nearby field in North Shore at around 9pm on Saturday when two men pulled up in a black ute with a white tray attempting to call the dogs over.

“I heard a bang and what sounded like a gun shot,” he said.

“They came running back and Bluey just dropped. I saw blood everywhere.”

Eleven-month old Bluey, who is a kelpie cross English mastiff and greyhound, sustained critical injuries at the scene.

Following the alleged shooting, Mr Seiler said he saw the two men escape on foot leaving the ute behind.

“I started crying, I just broke down when I saw my baby girl,” he said.

“She is here for my PTSD and mental health, without these girls I wouldn’t be here. I live for them.”

Bluey, who was rushed to a local animal hospital, underwent surgery in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“They put her injuries down as critical and needed to put in a drainage tube,” he said.

“I spent $1000 on vet fees this morning and I am only on $600 a fortnight, but I don’t care how much it costs, I will sell my car if I have to.”

Mr Seiler speculated the alleged shooting may have been the result of an attempted dog theft gone wrong, and is encouraging others to be careful.

“There is nothing that I can do, I am just really upset, I am thinking about moving areas,” he said.

“To turn on two absolutely innocent animals, it is wrong.”

RSPCA Victoria’s acting chief inspector Michelle Green confirmed inspectors were investigating the incident.

“RSPCA Victoria can confirm a cruelty report regarding a dog allegedly shot in the North Shore, Geelong region was received on Sunday evening,” she said.

“This is a current investigation and therefore no further comments are available at this time. “Anyone who witnessed the incident, or has additional information, is encouraged to contact RSPCA Victoria’s Inspectorate via www.rspcavic.org/report or by calling 9224 2222.”
