A hooded bandit who snuck in to a childcare centre and wreaked havoc on a LED display sign worth thousands of dollars has been arrested by Corio police.

A probe was immediately launched into the July 26 incident after the offender entered the Happy Hippo Childcare facility in Lovely Banks at about 3am.

It is alleged the man then unbolted a large four metre steel structured LED display sign and “pushed it over”, causing it to crack.

The alleged criminal damage left $50,000 worth of damaged goods, according to Senior Sergeant Kris Hamilton.

“Police quickly launched an investigation and went about executing warrants and collecting evidence,” she said.

A 29-year-old Whittington man handed himself in at the Corio police station on Wednesday night.

He has been charged with criminal damage and released on bail to attend the Geelong Magistrates Court on November 20.
