Cats’ local primary schools raising the roof for their past pupils

Finals fever has well and truly gripped Aireys Inlet, as local students get behind their influential superstar who was once school captain.

Aireys Inlet Primary School students will be hoping former student and midfielder Patrick Dangerfield can help get the Cats over the line in this Friday’s AFL preliminary final clash.

Geelong Football Club will be vying for a place in the AFL Grand Final when they take on the Brisbane Lions at the MCG.

School principal Jennifer Abel said Dangerfield started at the school in 1996 and was known as an enthusiastic student who did well academically.

“He excelled at all sports and was very competitive, especially in inter-school competitions.

Pat also was very creative and loved art,” Ms Abel said.

“He loved the art teacher Mrs Price, who is still on our staff and may teach Pat’s son (George) in prep next year.

“How ironic is that?”

Ms Abel said Dangerfield has returned to the school in recent years to speak to students about his football career.

“Over the years Pat has visited us at assembly and he is always generous with his time, popping into individual classrooms and inspiring our student leaders,” she said.

“I guess we will see a lot more of him as the new generation of the Dangerfield family tread our corridors once again.”

Ms Abel said the school community admired Dangerfield’s leadership skills and would be barracking for Geelong Football Club on Friday.

“Congratulations Pat on a remarkable career, not only are you a great player but also an admired leader” she said.

“I am hoping your time at Aireys Inlet Primary School somewhat helped shape the great person you are today. Go Cats!”

Leopold Primary School gets behind Jed Bews

Footy finals fever is building, with Leopold Primary School pupils preparing to cheer on former student and current Cat Jed Bews in the AFL preliminary final this week.

As the 28-year-old defender gets ready for Friday’s preliminary final clash with the Brisbane Lions, his former school community will be throwing their support behind him.

The defender attended the school from 1999 to 2005 with his older brother Jackson and younger sister Jayme.

A school spokeswoman said Bews was “very good at sport” and represented the school in a variety sports at local, district and state level.

“Leopold Primary School staff, students and the community wish Jed good luck and will be cheering the whole team on as the Cats move through to the AFL preliminary final and then maybe onto the 2022 AFL Grand Final,” the spokeswoman said.
