A Wandana Heights bub’s arrival into the world held up traffic when she was delivered in the middle of the street.

Paramedics delivered baby Madison as mum Kathryn Robins lay on a stretcher outside her house on November 28.

Mrs Robins had a 24 hour labour with first child William, now two, so when contractions with her second started at 6am she anticipated a long process.

“Then at 7.30am everything started to really hurt and she was born at 8.20am on the street,” Mrs Robins said.

Her midwife had advised Mrs Robins’ husband to call an ambulance or get to hospital as soon as possible after the pain escalated.

He called for paramedics.

They arrived within about 12 minutes, at 8.11am, Mrs Robins said.

“They gave me the green whistle and after a couple of puffs I was happy as Larry,” Mrs Robins said.

As they ushered Mrs Robins to the ambulance outside her home, she was in too much pain to get up the stairs into the vehicle.

She lay down on a stretcher on the street behind the ambulance, which was parked in the driveway, and Madison was well on her way.

“It was ‘wow, the head’s out’,” Mrs Robins said.

“She was just there.”

Madison was born, one day past her due date, about 8.20am.

“The paramedics were fabulous, they were really calm,” Mrs Robins said.

“I felt very safe in their hands.”

It was the first time delivering a baby for both attending paramedics, who were also accompanied by a university student.

Ambulance Victoria’s Jacob Morris was one of the paramedics who attended, and said it was a rewarding experience.

“It’s good to be involved in those major milestones,” Mr Morris said.

“Mum and dad were amazing and made the job go really smoothly.”

People on their morning walks saw the situation unfold, including a schoolboy who “probably got more than he bargained for”, Mrs Robins said.

Mrs Robins’ husband was directing traffic around the ambulance.

“Everything was such a blur,” Mrs Robins said.

“I think I was a little bit shocked but felt mostly relief that she was okay and I was okay.”

The paramedics took mum and bub to Geelong hospital, where they were checked out.

“It was just a whirlwind,” Mrs Robins said.

“Madison definitely likes to march to the beat of her own drum, she’s already this independent little girl.”

Mrs Robins was reunited with the paramedics who delivered her bub on Friday afternoon.

“I didn’t get a chance to thank them (before),” she said.

“I don’t know what would have happened if they hadn’t come.”
