Geelong medicos are being recognised in the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners state awards.

Banksia Medical Centre, which has sites in Newcomb and Torquay, has been named Victoria’s general practice of the year.

Owner and GP Bernard Shiu said the award was a “huge honour” and thanked the college and the clinics’ patients.

Dr Shiu said he believed pioneering care, like starting a community long Covid clinic, contributed to the win.

He said he hoped to inspire other clinics to embrace new innovations.

Banksia Medical Centre offers multidisciplinary care, with GPs, nurses, psychologists, podiatrists, dietitians and visiting specialists including geriatricians.

In 2020 Dr Shiu was named Victoria’s GP of the Year.

Dr Chris Paulin, from Kardinia Health, was named Victoria’s general practice supervisor of the year.

He is being recognised for his work supervising doctors completing their GP traineeships at the Belmont clinic.

“It feels like I’m being rewarded for something I enjoy doing,” he said.

“I was lucky enough to have quite a number of excellent supervisors.

“I really do feel a part of a collective of excellent supervisors within the region — I feel privileged to be part of that as well.”

Dr Paulin completed his medical degree at Deakin University in 2013 and worked at Geelong hospital.

Dr Paulin then completed his fellowship with the RACGP and has worked at Kardinia Health since 2017.

He said he was drawn to general practice because he enjoyed looking after people through all stages of life.

Banksia Medical Centre and Dr Paulin will receive their awards at a Victorian ceremony next month.

They are now in the running for national awards, which will be presented later in October.
