A two-storey, $10m development will see a supermarket and six apartments built on the northern corner of Jan Juc’s shopping precinct if plans currently out for public feedback are given the green light by Surf Coast Shire.

The project, which would also include a basement car park with 32 spaces, has been scaled back from three storeys to two after concerns were raised by council.

There are plans for a supermarket and six apartments within Jan Juc's commercial zone.

It is unclear what brand the supermarket would be, with its planned floor size around a quarter that of a standard Coles or Woolworths.

There is no supermarket in Jan Juc as it stands, with residents forced to make the short drive to Torquay to stock up on supplies.

The development, located at 24A Princes Tce, would be adjacent to the Beach Hotel and be 10.8m high.

The shopping strip is the only commercially zoned land in Jan Juc.

Eight car parks would be allocated to residents of the apartments, which would range from one-bedroom studios 69sqm in size to 129sqm three-bedroom offerings.

“At this stage, our clients are considering a boutique supermarket tailored to suit the needs of the Jan Juc community, akin to a small IGA or similar format,” Marshall Sullivan from Context Planning said.

“As you can see from the plans, it features a modest floor area of approximately 850sqm, basement/under croft-style carparking, and an overall architectural design that strikes the right balance between utilising the commercial-zoned land while respecting the coastal context of the site.”

The application also seeks approval to sell takeaway alcohol until 11pm seven days a week.

The public can comment on the plans until March 15.
