Geelong will enter 2025 with the same captaincy group despite Patrick Dangerfield expressing doubt over leading the side next year.
Dangerfield will captain the Cats for the third consecutive year with five-time All-Australian Tom Stewart to remain as vice-captain.
The 34-year-old said earlier this month that he enjoyed leading the Cats but was “not sure” whether he would take on the role next year.
He said at that time it was a decision for January or February, but the Cats captaincy debate has been put to bed in December.
“It’s about the right person for the job for next year, so I don’t think it’s anyone’s to own for a long period of time – unless you’re Joel Selwood, it’s a bit different isn’t it,” Dangerfield said after their first full session of the pre-season.
“It’s what’s best for the footy club, I think that’s the most important thing to keep front of mind.
“I think the longer you’re in the game you understand what is important, what’s not – kids changes that in terms of priorities.
“And as you get older, things change as well, because you’re not able to necessarily train as much or influence just physically like you once where you could just do it
“And that’s a good challenge, I think, because it means you need to find other ways to influence.
“So I don’t think there is anything wrong with captaining your side in your early 20s, or anything wrong in your 30s.”
Geelong football boss Andrew Mackie said he was grateful to have leaders like Dangerfield and Stewart.
“They are not only influential leaders on the field, but they are key drivers of high
performance and Geelong’s contribution to the community,” Mackie said.
“Our entire playing group, football program and broader staff are fully behind them as
they lead our AFL team in 2025.”
Dangerfield penned a two-year extension with the club in October and is closing in on his 350-game milestone.
