A promising Cat has suffered another injury blow, while a veteran requires further assessment. Plus, an update on Tom Hawkins.

Emerging Geelong ruckman Toby Conway is expected to be sidelined with a foot injury as the Cats sweat on his latest setback.

Conway was named to play for Geelong’s VFL side over the weekend but did not face Sandringham on Sunday, with the severity of his injury to be known later this week.

The 21-year-old and luckless veteran Cam Guthrie (achilles) are both awaiting further assessment but exciting forward Ollie Henry will be available for selection after missing the win over Essendon.

Henry completed light running with Tanner Bruhn (2-4 weeks), who will be sidelined for another 2-4 weeks with a scaphoid fracture, at Cats training on Monday morning.

Coach Chris Scott said on Saturday night that Henry was left out as a precaution.

Meanwhile, Cats champion Tom Hawkins is on track with his foot injury.

“Tom is going really well, he’s been at the Club and has commenced his rehab. We are expecting his return in about six weeks time, but things have progressed really well early on,” Geelong assistant football boss Brett Johnson said.

“Unfortunately, Toby has got a foot issue that we are still looking at and investigating.

“We will know more later this week and will provide an update then, for what that means this week and beyond.

“Cam is getting assessed again today and looking forward to hopefully return soon.”

The setback is ominous for Conway who has had a wretched run with injury since joining the Cats.

Conway played just 14 games in his first two seasons at the club, missing half of the 2023 season with a foot stress fracture.

He also underwent minor foot surgery at the end of 2023.

The Cats may be forced to continue using Sam De Koning in the ruck or turn to veteran Rhys Stanley, who has had form and injury struggles this season.

Guthrie — who has been sidelined since round 10 — told this publication last week that he was hoping to return against Hawthorn after testing his achilles in main training but that a return date remained unclear.
