Geelong rookie Joe Furphy has been delisted after just one season with the club.

Furphy, the older brother of NBA draftee Johnny, was added to Geelong’s list in September last year as a Category B rookie — a list method that has brought the likes of Mark Blicavs and Oisin Mullin to the club.

The 203 centimetre ruckman showed some solid development in Geelong’s VFL side, playing 10 games and averaging 20 hit-outs, six hit-outs to advantage and eight touches per game, but will not earn a new contract.

Furphy, 25, was sidelined until round 10 this season with an ankle injury

The Cats were often playing three rucks in their VFL side, with Rhys Stanley, Toby Conway, Sam De Koning, first-year Cat Mitch Edwards and Furphy all rotating through at various times.

Furphy had had spent time with the Northern Knights as a junior being turning his focus to basketball. His brother was taken the 35th pick in the NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers.

“We have enjoyed having Joe as part of our football program in 2024, he is a quality person and we wish him all the best in the future,” Geelong list boss Andrew Mackie said.

Geelong secured midfielder Bailey Smith during the trade period but has plenty of spots available on its primary and rookie lists.

The Cats delisted premiership players Gary Rohan and Brandan Parfitt, former Hawk Emerson Jeka, and uncapped quartet Mitch Hardie, Phoenix Foster, Oscar Murdoch and James Willis last month.

Champion goalkicker Tom Hawkins and Irish VFL/AFL games record holder Zach Tuohy also retired at the end of the season.

Geelong will add injury-riddled former Blue Jack Martin when the delisted free agency period opens at the start of November.

Captain Patrick Dangerfield and fellow premiership Cats Mitch Duncan and Rhys Stanley are yet to sign on but will receive new contracts.

Geelong currently has picks 45, 57 and 75 in this year’s draft — offloading its first and second pick to land Smith — but is open to trading back into the 2024 draft.
