GEELONG Grammar skipper Henry Melville said it would be “an honour” to lead the school to an APS title, but he was determined to play each game on its merits.
The school side is currently leading the competition and is the only undefeated team left after knocking off Xavier College, and will face Geelong College on Saturday.
Melville, who has made 200 runs at an average of 66.7 (including an undefeated 107), said it was one of the strongest sides he had played in.
“We’ve absolutely got so much batting depth, we really bat right down the order and we’ve got some great guys like ‘Peakey’ (Ollie Peake) and Sam (Lalor) who made runs last week,” he said.
“Our bowling has been really good as well, there aren’t many parts of the game that we have struggled with this year.
“We’ve 100 per cent been focused on wanting to win an APS premiership with this group, it would be an honour to do it as one of the senior players, but we need to take it one game at a time and not get distracted.”
Xavier College and Geelong Grammar were the only two undefeated teams last week, with Grammar chasing down the Melbourne-based side’s total of 144 with three wickets in hand.
Melville said he thought his side was in trouble with Xavier 0-93 just before tea on Friday, but a Peake bowling masterclass helped steady the ship.
“I was a bit worried during it,” he said.
“Their openers were pretty chanceless, they didn’t give us much so I thought we’d be chasing a much bigger total.
“But Peakey bowled so well, he bowled something like 27 overs in a row and they just couldn’t get him away.
“Josh Lindsay (who took 3-17) was also really good with the ball.
“Then to have Sam (Lalor) and Jack Headon put on a bit of a partnership with the bat was really good, they got us over the line.”
