THERE has only been two rounds of football in the GFL, but already some of the competition’s brightest stars are stamping their authority on the competition.
Massive disposal tallies, big bags of goals and huge tackling numbers have highlighted the opening fortnight of football around the region.
Here are the GFL’s top statistical leaders.
Disposals
A clear ball-winning midfielder in the GFL, Grovedale’s Matt Harvey has no problems finding the ball.
After 36 touches in the first game, he backed it up with 35 disposals in round 2, showing he has tremendous consistency.
St Mary’s star Harry Benson is not far behind, with 69 touches across the opening fortnight of football.
North Shore co-coach Nick Dixon has recorded 66 touches, at an average of 33 per game.
Clearances
Dual clearance kings in the GFL after two rounds, with a tie at the top between North Shore’s Nick Dixon and South Barwon ruck Luke Davis.
Both Dixon and Davis have recorded 18 clearances across the opening two weeks.
Benson has found himself in the top three for another statistical category, recording 15 clearances in the first two rounds.
Harvey has recorded 14 clearances and sits just outside the top three.
Contested Marks
A last-quarter heroic performance from Newtown & Chilwell’s Lachlan Bond helped secure the Eagles’ round 2 win against Leopold.
The full forward took seven contested marks, the most in any game this season, on his way to a five-goal haul.
Bond leads Bell Park’s Jackson Bright in contested marks with 11, while the Dragon has recorded eight across the opening fortnight of football.
Bright had six in Bell Park’s round 2 win on his way to kicking 7.4.
Tackles
Another tie at the top of the leaderboards, with Colac’s Ryan Monaghan and Newtown & Chilwell’s Mitch Diamond applying equal pressure to start the season.
Both Monaghan and Diamond have laid 18 tackles each at an average of nine per game, with North Shore’s Nick Dixon and Bell Park’s Jamie Fulton closely trailing on 15 each.
Colac’s Kody Spokes, Newtown & Chilwell’s Matt McMahon and Geelong West’s David Handley have recorded 14 each, but Handley has only played one game.
Goals
An impressive eight-goal haul pushed St Mary’s star Pat Dowling to the top of the goal kicking leaderboard, with the crafty forward leading the competition with 12 majors.
He is two ahead of Newtown & Chilwell forward Lachlan Bond, who has slotted two bags of five goals across the opening fortnight of football.
Bell Park’s Jackson Bright has kicked nine goals in the opening rounds, including 7.4 against St Albans.
South Barwon pair Andrew Boseley and Jackson Carmody have enjoyed the Swans’ strong start to the season, with bags 8.4 (Boseley in round 2) and 6.2 (Carmody in round 1) highlighting the dangerous avenues to goal.
