Cats legend Gary Ablett Jr will pull on a new local footy jersey in 2024, having agreed to a one-game appearance in the Ovens and Murray League.
The two-time Brownlow Medalist will play a game for Myrtleford next season, having retired from the AFL at the end of the 2020 season.
Ablett has played for multiple local sides since calling time on his illustrious career at the Cats and the Gold Coast Suns, including Drouin and Creswick in Victoria, as well as Palmerston in the Northern Territory and Centrals Trinity Beach in Cairns.
Myrtleford has struggled in the Ovens and Murray League in recent seasons, winning just one game from 16 matches last year to finish last on the ladder.
It will not be the first time an Ablett has worn the Saints colours at the club, with Gary Ablett Sr playing a season with Myrtleford in 1980s during his sabbatical from the AFL, while his great uncle Len Ablett is a legend of the club.
Len Ablett was inducted in 2006 to the Ovens and Murray League Hall of Fame after 352 games for the Saints in the 1940s, while also winning the best and fairest in 1950 and coaching the club, as well as being club president for 21 years and the senior vice president for the league.
Ablett Jr is regarded as one of the greatest ever football players following his 19-year AFL career, having claimed two premierships with Geelong, two Brownlow Medals, eight All-Australian selections, five AFLPA MVP awards, and three AFLCA Champion Player of the Year awards.
Myrtleford is yet to confirm when Ablett will play his one game for the club.
