Premiership defender Jack Henry’s season is likely over after scans confirmed a foot injury he had suffered during the win over Port Adelaide at the weekend was more serious than first thought.
Henry was subbed out in the third quarter of the 12-point win over the premiership fancies after his foot was stood on in the opening term.
Scans confirmed the 24 year old had suffered a lisfranc ligament injury, with the injury being different to the one Henry suffered in the pre-season on his opposite foot.
Cats footy boss Simon Lloyd said it was disappointing to lose Henry for an extended period of time.
“We were surprised to see the results of the scans as the incident occurred innocuously during the game,” he said.
“Our medical team will now work through the options available to provide the optimal outcome for Jack and determine how long he will be sidelined for.”
While the Cats have not provided a timeline for his return, Henry is expected to be sidelined for at least the rest of the home-and-away season, with a likely possibility the utility does not return in 2023.
Players returning from similar injuries typically spend six-to-eight weeks in a moon boot before gradually returning to training, however if the player opts for surgery the timeline pushes out to a six-month recovery time.
Geelong has not confirmed whether Henry will go under the knife to repair the injury, with the surgical route certain to end his 2023 campaign.
Lloyd said he looked forward to seeing Henry partake in his rehabilitation in the same manner he plays football.
“We are all disappointed for Jack, he is a very important player for us, not just with his flexibility to play a number of roles, but because of his calm head and stability he provides down back,” he said.
“We know Jack’s work ethic and the attitude he has towards his training and football and know he will attack his rehab in the same manner.”
