Scores of dangerous car crash hot spots in Victoria will receive major upgrades under a $38.7 million boost to improve 92 roads across the state.
The federal government has rolled the new wave of funding for the 2020-21 financial year, with the high-priority locations linked to 521 injuries and nine deaths over the last five years.
New traffic lights, improved crossings and redesigned roundabouts will be used to improve safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.
Among the projects announced are key upgrades in Melbourne’s southeast, including an intersection at Corrigan Rd and Harold Rd in Noble Park and another at Frankston-Dandenong Rd and O’Gradys Rd.
Federal Road Safety Assistant Minister Scott Buchholz said the new funding would build on the work of previous years, with 535 projects announced in Victoria under the scheme.
“Regional Victorians have been the primary beneficiaries of this program, as we have placed a heavy focus on addressing the number of crashes causing death and injury in regional areas,” he said.
“This new funding will see total investment through the Black Spot program in Victoria rise to $237.4 million, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to improving road safety.”
Victorian Senator David Van said local communities had been vital in locating dangerous black spots to improve.
“Road crashes place major emotional and economic strains on all affected communities but particularly the families and friends of the victims,” he said.
“Motorists living in and visiting south east Melbourne will be pleased to know a total of 10 notorious black spots in the region will be fixed with funding from the program.
“None of these projects would be delivered without the community’s vital input and I encourage all residents and motorists in the region to nominate projects for future funding rounds.”
Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Michael McCormack said:
“This major investment is part of the Australian Government’s commitment to building safer roads right across the nation.”
