Men’s Sheds designed to reduce the social isolation of men across the country will revive half a million dollars in funding for materials and projects.

Morrison Government grants totalling $500,000 will be shared between 135 Sheds

to buy tools and equipment, fix buildings, train people and host men’s health activities.

Each shed is unique but all are designed to help men create a network and undertake productive projects, according to the Head of Men’s Sheds Australia David Helmers.

“The main objective is the prevention of social isolation, especially in older men,” he said.

“It gives them a place of belonging, similar to a workplace.

“They might build bookcases or toys for schools. They are always doing some type of community work.”

The funding will be handed to the groups as part of the National Shed Development Programme and another round will be announced in six months.

Millions will also be spent to equip every Men’s Shed in Australia with a portable defibrillator which some sheds will also share with the broader community.

There are more than 1000 Men’s Sheds across Australia and a further 2000 have sprung up around the world following the success of the Australian initiative.

Health Minister Greg Hunt said the centres were important for Australian men and their mental health.

“Men’s Sheds are places where men can find social support and camaraderie while engaged in meaningful projects,” he said.

This year’s budget saw funding for the Sheds expanded to $11.1 million over fours years.
