Food delivery rider in Sydney racks up 240 demerit points in four months

A French national food delivery rider has racked up 240 demerit points since January this year while driving dangerously on Sydney roads.

NSW Labor plans to overhaul demerit point system

A rogue food delivery rider has racked up 240 demerit points since January this year while driving dangerously on Sydney roads.

NSW Police last night vowed to launch an investigation into how the rider was able to travel undetected for so long.

The brazen behaviour over the past four months by the French national was only uncovered when NSW Highway Patrol officers applied to Transport NSW for his full driving record, and made the shocking discovery.

Police also discovered the rider, 23, had been working for multiple delivery businesses who each provided him with a motor scooter for his shift, meaning he was not the registered owner of any vehicle.

The delivery rider’s downfall began on April 13 when highway patrol officers from Ryde, in the inner west, spotted him performing an illegal U-turn at a set of traffic lights on Lane Cove Rd at Macquarie Park, and pulled him over.

Police said the rider produced a French driver’s license.

“Further inquiries by police revealed that the rider was the holder of a NSW C-class unrestricted drivers licence, thus making his French drivers licence no longer valid,” a NSW Police spokesman said.

Checks also revealed the rider’s NSW license had been suspended at the time due to unpaid fines.

Officers issued the rider with traffic infringements for making a U-turn at an intersection with traffic lights, and unlicensed for riding a motor scooter.

But a day later, highway patrol officers spotted the same delivery scooter and stopped the rider for the purpose of a random breath test.

Officers said the rider produced a French drivers licence.

“Checks revealed that the rider was the holder of a New South Wales Class C unrestricted licence and was spoken to by police less than 24 hours beforehand about his licence and the fact he was unlicensed for Class R (Motorcycle),” the spokesman said.

The rider was issued with a court attendance notice for driving without the correct license for a motor scooter, and given a date to attend Burwood Local Court in May.

But undeterred, the rider was caught again on April 26, this time on a different scooter, when he was stopped for a random breath test.

“The rider, again, did the same thing and produced a French drivers licence,” a NSW Police spokesman said.

Once again, the rider was served with a Court Attendance notice to attend Burwood local court in May 2024 for the offence of unlicensed for motor scooter.

It’s understood that after the third occasion of fining the man at roadside checks, that officers applied to Transport NSW to obtain his full driving record, and discovered he had accumulated 240 demerit points since January.

A senior police source explained how officers were hamstrung in situations like this due to a combination of an international driver’s licence, the vehicle not being registered to the person and therefore can’t be seized or have the plates taken.

“It’s pretty terrifying...if this bloke or anyone like that had hit a pedestrian or another motorists, there’s no third party insurance,” the police source said.

NRMA spokesman Peter Khoury said he was “speechless” to think someone could rack up 240 points in four months.

“It beggars belief...but this incident once again demonstrates how fundamental highway patrol is in keeping our roads safe,” Mr Khoury said.

“Without the highway patrol pulling this rider over, the public would have been none the wiser.”

A NSW Police spokesman last night said police would investigate how this rider was able to keep travelling despite his shocking record.

The rider is due to face Burwood Local Court on May 28.
