Townsville Police investigate unit fires on Granville Street, Pimlico

Townsville police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a significant fire in an apartment block overnight.

Townsville police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a significant fire in an apartment block overnight Sunday.

Acting Detective Inspector Phil Watts said that police, fire and ambulance emergency crews were called to the blaze on 13 Granville Street in Pimlico at 8.35pm “in relation to that unit complex being on fire”.

He said Queensland Fire Department were able to bring the fire under control by 10:15pm.

There were no reported injuries.

Multiple units in the residential complex are understood to have suffered fire, smoke or water damage.

“Police have established a crime scene in regards investigating the cause of that fire.”

Asked if there were any leads, the high-ranking police investigator said “it is very early on”.

“Obviously, with a fire, it is difficult to get access to that scene until it is safe to do so,” he said.

“We do have scientific officers there trying to establish what the cause of that fire was … the fire-scene examination will take a considerable period of time, obviously it is quite an involved process.”

Det Insp Watts said all people at the property had been accounted for.

EARLIER: Probe into fire after multiple units damaged

Emergency crews were called to a ‘block of units alight’ in Pimlico last night.

Queensland Fire Department advised they were called just before 8:45pm on Sunday evening, with five fire crews arriving to several units well alight.

All persons were accounted for during a primary and secondary search

Queensland Ambulance advised no one needed to be assessed for injuries.

The fire was under control by 10:15pm.

Fire investigators are working to find the cause of the blaze.
