Five cars have been crushed after a “very scary” remote-operated crane toppling at a Gold Coast university campus.
Emergency services were called to the Bond University campus at Robina at 11.15 on Wednesday to a crane falling onto five parked cars, a Queensland Fire Department spokeswoman said.
The crane was being operated remotely and no one was hurt, a Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said.
Police were not called to the scene.
Nearby resident Gail said she was walking her dog when she got the shock of a lifetime.
“I heard all the racket of the tree chopping, then all I heard was this huge big grinding noise, looked up, the truck was up in the air then fell on its side and with that the crane fell on it and fell on all the cars,” she said.
“Everyone was shocked and everyone was running around and didn’t know what to do. It was really very scary for them all I would imagine.”
A Bond University spokesman said an external contractor was using the crane to lop cyclone-damaged trees when it fell.
“No one was injured and the operator, using the crane remotely, is safe,” the spokesman said, adding Workplace Health and Safety Queensland had visited.
“Five cars were damaged. The tree removal was scheduled to coincide with the semester break when most students are away from campus and there is no damage to buildings or impact to university operations.”
