Departing Finance Minister Mathias Cormann will be nominated by Scott Morrison to head up the global Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

The Prime Minister announced on Thursday morning that Senator Cormann – who had already confirmed his plan to leave the federal parliament by the end of 2020 – would be Australia’s choice to lead the OECD.

“The OECD needs the sort of leadership an Australian can provide,” Mr Morrison said.

He said he was ideally equipped for the “challenging” secretary-general role to help “drive a global recovery” from the COVID-19 recession.

Mr Morrison confirmed Trade and Tourism Minister Simon Birmingham would be the incoming finance Minister and the leader of the government in the Senate.

Employment Minister Michaelia Cash will become the government’s new deputy leader in the Senate.

Mr Morrison flagged further changes to his ministerial line-up would be made at the end of the year.
