A Townsville soccer club will be able to “beat the heat” and hold more night games with the help of a $200,000 commitment.
The funding, which will be given to MA Olympic FC if the Coalition win government, will go towards lighting upgrades at the club’s grounds.
Dawson MP Andrew Willcox met with players and committee members from MA Olympic FC in Annandale on Wednesday to committee cash for upgrades.
With more than 650 members, club secretary Sheena King said the funding would “mean the world to the club”, who use the facility every day of the week and allow the club to continue to grow in the number of players and games.
“An upgrade of our lights would enable us to host night games, push our trainings back a little bit so our younger players are not exposed to the sun,” Ms King said.
Ms King said the club had a strong retention rate, with more players joining each year.
“We have great facilities, so this upgrade will help our club grow even further,” she said.
Mr Willcox said the upgrade would be “very, very worthwhile” for the club.
“We need to get our kids out of this harsh sun at every opportunity,” he said.
“Sport brings families and communities together, and this upgrade will mean more opportunities for kids and adults alike to enjoy the game they love.”
Starting out life in 1958 as International Soccer Club, the club was renamed Olympic FC in 1960, and in 1967 another club came along called Mundingburra United SC.
The two clubs eventually merged in 1993, and in 1995 Aitkenvale was also amalgamated to form MA Olympic FC.
The announcement follows similar commitments from sporting and community groups by Mr Willcox including $500,000 for the Home Hill Community Sports Club and $20,000 for Angel Paws animal rescue centre in Stuart.
The commitments will be honoured if Mr Willcox is re-elected under an elected Liberal Federal Government.
