Police confirm Giru man’s death after two vehicle crash on Bruce Hwy at Alligator Creek

A 27-year-old man has tragically died in a crash on the Bruce Highway near Alligator Creek, with the road remaining closed in both directions for more than 11 hours.

UPDATE 5pm: Queensland Police have confirmed that a man has lost his life following a serious crash south of Townsville on Friday morning.

Police released a statement saying that the Forensic Crash Unit was continuing to investigate after a fatal two-vehicle traffic crash at Alligator Creek.

“Initial investigations indicate that around 6am, a vehicle and truck collided on the Bruce Highway at Alligator Creek, south of Townsville,” QPS said.

“The driver of the vehicle, a 27-year-old Giru man, sustained critical injuries and was declared deceased at the scene.

“The driver of the truck, a 57-year-old Bundaberg man, was transported to Townsville University Hospital in a stable condition.”

With traffic control in place, it is understood that there was a lengthy queue of traffic waiting to get through, with the alternative route via Woodstock Giru Rd still blocked by flood waters.

There are reports that the highway may have suffered damage from the crash.

Police were unable to confirm when the highway might reopen.

Investigations into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.

Investigators have appealed for anyone who may have information or relevant CCTV or dashcam footage to come forward.

One patient has been transported from the scene to Townsville University Hospital in a stable condition with a hip injury.

The Bruce Hwy is closed in both directions following a collision between a car and truck near Alligator Creek, south of Townsville.

Queensland Traffic is advising motorists to expect long delays.

The crash was reported at 6.06am, and paramedics have confirmed the driver of the car is in a life-threatening condition.

The truck driver is in a stable condition with some hip pain.

One vehicle has also gone off the road and is in floodwater.
