He’s the Christmas toy that everyone wants, from the show that hardly anyone watches, which you can’t get until the New Year.
Meet Baby Yoda — which is not his real name — the breakout star of the Disney+ show The Mandalorian who is simply called ‘The Child” for now.
You can’t move on the internet without tripping over a Baby Yoda meme, while Google searches for him now dwarf searches for the main characters from the final Star Wars movie Rise Of Skywalker.

He might be breaking the internet but he’s also going to break a lot of children’s hearts. Because Disney didn’t want to spoil The Mandalorian or affect sales of merchandise from the final Star Wars movie, you can’t buy a Baby Yoda soft toy for love or money until the New Year.
So who is Baby Yoda? For a start he’s not Yoda as The Mandalorian is set five years after Yoda’s death.
He could be Yoda’s son but Yoda had been living in solitary exile for about 25 years and the last time we saw a female of Yoda’s species — named Yaddle — was back in Revenge Of The Sith.
Unless Yoda had been getting booty calls on the planet of Dagobah, that makes “Baby Yoda” a decent age, even for a dad who claims to have lived to 900.
He’s a cute baby but not so much if you think of him as a 30-year-old dude.
Disney has jumped on the bandwagon, with a range of hastily-made Baby Yoda merchandise for sale on disney.com and starwars.com.
You can get a T-shirt, phone case, tote bag, coffee mug or sippy cup with his face on. And what kid doesn’t want to spend Christmas morning playing with a sippy cup?
A proper range of toys from Funko, Mattel and Buffalo Games will be out in the New Year and you can even pre-order some of them.
But disney.com warns the plush toys won’t be available for shipping until January 4 and some of the other toys won’t hit stores until April 2020.
So fans have hit back, creating a range of their own cute cuddly toys.
But you can’t buy those, or Disney’s lawyers will be on you faster than Yoda could say: “Officially licensed, they are not”.
