Residents across Redland City are experiencing widespread power outages with at least seven suburbs impacted, including Cleveland, Coochiemudlo Island, Mount Cotton, Sheldon, Thornlands, and Victoria Point.
Energy provider Energex reported 920 customers were without power on Thursday night due to various issues, including fallen powerlines and emergency repairs.
The hardest-hit area is Coochiemudlo Island, where 709 customers have had no power since 12pm on Thursday and have been told not to expect in to come back on until Monday.
The outage remains under investigation.
The estimated restoration time for the island was originally 2.30pm on Thursday – however, that has not happened and residents fear they will not have power restored until Monday.
Cleveland was also dealing with two separate outages, one caused by powerlines down affecting 79 customers, and another due to emergency repairs impacting 54 customers.
Further outages have been reported in Mount Cotton, Sheldon, Thornlands, and Victoria Point. In Sheldon, 68 customers were without power due to fallen powerlines, with a 4.30pm restoration time lapsing.
Smaller outages affecting four customers each have been recorded in Mount Cotton and Thornlands, both under investigation.
Victoria Point has the least number of affected residents, with only two customers affected.
Energex has urged residents to stay clear of fallen powerlines and report any additional issues. They have also advised residents in affected areas to prepare for extended outages by ensuring they have access to essential supplies, such as batteries, torches, and non-perishable food. Emergency services have been made aware of the island outage, and efforts are underway to restore power as soon as possible.
With severe weather conditions recently impacting Southeast Queensland, authorities have not ruled out the possibility that strong winds and heavy rain may have contributed to the outages.
