Deba George hits 16 three-pointers

A Darwin basketballer has shattered a local three-point record, just eight days after equalling it, a hoops historian has confirmed.

Ellas Titans point guard Deba George, who once played at the Cairns Taipans for four NBL seasons, has been a dominant force for the fourth-placed Ellas Titans in Darwin Championship Season basketball.

The 37-year-old is second in the competition for assists and third for total assists, average and total match points and shooting percentage from beyond the arc.

In fact, George hit 16 from 34 attempts – on his way to 53 points – against Razzle/Cannons on December 4, a new record for Darwin league basketball according to historian Jeff Larson.

Larson, who moved to Queensland in 2009, has kept records on Darwin league basketball since Cyclone Tracy in 1974.

George did not attempt a single two-pointer, apart from five free throws, as the Titans won 140-101.

It came the week after he shot 14 from 22 attempts – while scoring 42 points in total – against PaRBA on November 26, equalling the record of Eagles’ Anthony Golden in 2017.

George told the NT News he had no idea his 14 threes had equalled the benchmark.

“I didn’t even think about it,” George said.

“I just take what the defence gives me.

“I didn’t even realise until the end of the game that I only shot all threes. If I knew there was a record there … I would have kept going.

“It’s been fun the last two weekends, for sure.”

However, he said he went out against PaRBA with the intention of breaking the record, the following round.

“It was a game we wanted to win of course,” he said.

“I thought I’m going to have so much fun today and put up some shots.

“And then I made by 16th three right at the end of the game, the last shot I hit before the buzzer.”

Meanwhile, George, a Cairns native, said he was open to the idea of playing with the Darwin Salties in its second NBL1 North season next year.

“There’s a possibility, it’s not something I’ve been thinking about,” he said.

“But if the opportunity presented itself, I’d have a look at it for sure.

“I’d be all for it.

“Darwin’s always been like a home away from home for me.

“It’s close to home (back in Cairns).”
