DPP Lloyd Babb unleashes inner rapper at annual conference

He’s known for his steely composure but even Director of Public Prosecutions Lloyd Babb got into the Christmas spirit at his agency’s annual conference – unleashing his inner rapper to deliver his presentation.

Bassam Hamzy, the Brothers for Life gang leader's life of crime inside Goulburn Supermax prison.

Lloyd Babb SC’s critics can’t accuse him of being vanilla anymore after the DPP went full Vanilla Ice at the prosecuting agency’s annual conference on Tuesday.

We’re told Babb looked more like QC Hammer when he donned a sideways cap and (maybe) a gold chain before delivering his presentation to the crowd as an actual rap.

One attendee said Babb’s presentation was titled “Policy (w) rap” and delivered to the tune of “White Lines” by 80s hip-hop icons Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.

Snitch almost had a stroke when we first heard, such was the number of puns that flooded our collective brain.

We’re still chasing details, like does this mean The Fresh Prince of Liverpool Street is planning a change in direction for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions?

Will he change the office’s name to The Notorious DPP, De Lloyd Soul or Run DPP?

Will the office’s mission statement, which currently refers to prosecuting crimes for the people of NSW, change to ‘Who’s down with DPP? (Yeah, you know me)’?.

Did he have back up singers (The Babb Eyed Peas)? Were they all male (The Babbsie Boys)?

Then there’s the question of did Babb adopt a rap name?

Babbonce’? Snoop Babb? Dr Ex Parte? Lloydicrous? P Babby? Babbsie Smalls?

We think Babb should opt for an alias with an Australian flavour.

We’re going with Vanilla Slice or Iced VoVo.

NOT SO HAPPY NEW YEAR

Martin Churchill, the lawyer accused of running drugs for murderer Bassam Hamze, looks set to ring in the new year behind bars unless he can manufacture a Christmas miracle in the NSW Supreme Court.

Churchill had his bail application refused in Central Local Court on Thursday, leaving him with little hope of getting out of bars any time soon.

The Sydney lawyer is facing seven charges, including supplying more than a commercial quantity of illegal drugs and directing a criminal group.

Churchill, who is aged in 60s, was arrested in sensational circumstances after police linked him to Hamze while investigation the shooting murder of 15-year-old Brayden Dillon.

Police allege Churchill used legal contact calls at Goulburn Supermax with Hamzy, who was his client, to direct an Ice drug ring from jail between October 2017 to October 2018.

LAWYER’S LEGAL WIN

The other lawyer charged alongside Churchill was Ali Abbas had a partial win in the NSW Supreme Court on Friday.

Abbas was charged with being an accessory after the fact to Brayden Dillon’s murder and when police arrested him in October 2018 they seized piles of evidence from his home, office and other locations.

Abbas and Hamzy took action in the Supreme Court in an attempt to claim legal privilege over the seized material.

The items ranged from legal file notes plus correspondence with other lawyers and clients and one man whose name is now suppressed and one article published by this newspaper.

Of the 118 pieces of evidence, Justice Geoff Bellew granted Abbas legal privilege to eight of them, meaning police are restrained from viewing, copying, disseminating or relying on the material in any legal proceedings.

Police allege Abbas co-ordinated and facilitated false affidavits to distance suspects from Brayden’s murder and that he passed information relating to the teen’s shooting between various people.

Legal types are historically protective of the reputation of their profession and hate the sort of attention brought by Abbas’ situation.

Abbas was suspended from practising has a lawyer after being charged.

And Justice Bellew referenced this in the opening line of his judgment without leaving much room for a comeback story.

“The plaintiff is a former solicitor of this Court,” Justice Bellew wrote.

MUSICAL CHAIRS

State Crime Command has been a bit like musical chairs lately.

With the elevation and departures of a few superintendents lately, there are some plum spots to be filled.

Enter Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty.

The straight shooting cop is tipped to move over to lead the Homicide Squad after a stint at the Robbery and Serious Crime Squad.

He will still be in the same building as his wife, Detective Inspector Jayne Doherty, who is a senior officer at the Drugs and Firearms Squad.

Odds are the Terrorism Investigations Squad commander, Detective Superintendent Darren Bennett, will move from the metropolis of North Sydney to level nine at SCC.

Bennett, who has overseen every major CT operation in the last five years, is the strongest contender for the director of operations, left open following the promotion of Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith.
