Road spikes used to stop police evader – August 29

A drink-driving suspect has been arrested after road spikes brought an end to his bid to evade police.

The man in his 50s was stopped on Macquarie St about 7.40am on Sunday.

He provided a breath sample that police allege exceeded the legal limit and drove away from the scene in a white Holden utility.

“He travelled from Hobart across the Tasman Bridge to Rokeby and then Cambridge via Pass Rd.

“During the evade, he drove into an unoccupied police car causing minor damage.

“Road spikes were successfully deployed three times and he eventually stopped on Richmond Rd at Cambridge and was taken into custody.”

No one was injured in the incident.

Police investigate ‘targeted’ attack – August 28

POLICE are hunting for four offenders and a stolen vehicle after a young man was stabbed at a Devonport property on Saturday.

Emergency services were called to a house in Gunn St just after 1pm following a report that up to four people had forced entry into the house.

Police said the 23-year-old man inside was assaulted and his car then stolen.

The victim suffered multiple wounds to his arms and head and was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

“An edged weapon was located at the scene and at this stage the incident appears to be targeted,” police said.

Police are still looking for the stolen white 2009 Holden utility, registration E77YJ.

Anyone who sees the vehicle is asked not to approach it or the occupants, but instead call police immediately.

Anyone with information in relation to the wounding, including dashcam footage of the stolen car, is asked to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000.

High-range drink driver at Strahan – August 28

A WOMAN who holds a P2 licence has been charged after returning a blood alcohol reading of 0.163 when she was pulled over by police in Strahan on Friday night.

The 28-year-old woman, from Tasmania’s south, was driving a Mazda sedan in the West Coast town when she was intercepted for a random breath test.

P2 licence holders are required to return a zero alcohol reading.

The driver was arrested, charged and bailed to appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court at a later date.

She was also issued with a Road Safety Disqualification Notice which immediately disqualifies her from driving for 24 months.

Workplace death at Geeveston – August 27

A MAN has died in a logging workplace incident in Tasmania’s Huon Valley on Friday.

Police, other emergency services and WorkSafe Tasmania remain at the scene in the Geeveston area.

It was initially reported to police at 11.05am.

“Sadly police can advise a man has died as a result of the incident,’’ a Tasmania Police spokeswoman said.

“The man’s next of kin has been advised. WorkSafe Tasmania will investigate.”

There are no more specifics on the incident at this stage.

Police and WorkSafe Tasmania will prepare a report for the Coroner.

WorkSafe Tasmania has been contacted for comment.

Dog attack Devonport – August 26

UPDATE, 4:27PM:

The Devonport City Council has confirmed that a pit bull that attacked a young child overnight has been euthanised.

Tasmania Police said they are continuing to investigate if any offence has been committed under the Dog Control Act.

UPDATE, 2.45PM:

The owner of a dog which attacked a young girl last night is expected to meet with Devonport City Council officers this afternoon and surrender the animal.

Inspector Steven Jones said the Dog’s owner had contacted the council and a meeting had been arranged.

Inspector Jones said the dog’s fate would be decided and the owner may be charged with offences under the Dog Control Act.

He said the injured child had been playing with the pit bull cross and friends her age when the attack happened.

The residents of the Nicholls St address had dragged the dog off her, rendered first aid and taken the injured girl to her parents house nearby.

She has undergone surgery at the Launceston General Hospital and has received stitches to her face, neck and head.

It is understood more surgery will be needed.

“The mother of the girl is devastated. It was an horrific scene at the house,” Insp. Jones said.

He said police had been to the address before but did not outline what that previous visit was about.

He reminded dog owners to be vigilant when children were playing with an animal.

Police are investigating an incident in Devonport overnight where a child received serious injuries to her face, head, neck and jaw.

Police said around 7.40pm, the girl visited a house on Nicholls Street when she was attacked by a dog (pictured) belonging to the residence.

She was taken to the Launceston General Hospital with “serious and substantial injuries”.

According to Police, the dog had been removed from the property and the owner refused to disclose its location to police.

“Police will be conducting further inquiries with the dog owner and Council today to locate the dog,” a statement from Tasmania Police read.

Anyone with information in relation to the location of the dog is asked to contact Devonport Police on 131 444.

Traffic delays on the Tasman Bridge – August 25

There was traffic delays on the Tasman Bridge, when two cars collided with each other in the middle of the highway during peak rush hour this morning.

The two cars crashed in the middle lanes, slowing traffic along the bridge to a crawl for several minutes.

Police and tow trucks rushed to the scene and managed to free up the highway within 20 minutes.

A police spokeswoman said neither drivers were harmed in the crash, and that the road had been cleared of traffic.

“It was a very minor crash called in at 7.55am. No injuries, it’s all clear now,” the spokeswoman said.

“It was a two-vehicle collision, but it was cleared by 8.12am, so very quick.”

Dozens of drivers fined in Hobart traffic blitz – August 24

23 drivers have been nabbed in a police traffic blitz within just two hours in the Hobart CBD on Tuesday morning.

“One driver was fined after failing to stop for a red light, 21 people were caught using their mobile phones while driving and one person was issued an infringement for inattentive driving.” said Tasmania Police.

Uniform and plain clothed officers took part in the operation on foot and in traffic.

Following the blitz police reminded drivers that using a mobile phone while stopped at traffic lights is an offence that can see motorists fined $346 and lose three demerit points.

Additionally officers warned Learner and P1 provisional holders that using a mobile phone connected to headphones, Bluetooth or speakerphone while driving is also an offence.
