A WOMAN who killed her two sons left her husband a note saying she hoped he could go on without them, a court has heard.
Donna Fitchett, 51, gave Thomas, 11, and Matthew, 9, a cocktail of drugs before smothering or strangling them in their Balwyn North home in September 2005.
David Fitchett told the Supreme Court after discovering his sons’ bodies he read a note his wife had left him.
Part of Ms Fitchett’s letter he read to the jury said:
“I am so sorry for your pain. I didn’t do it because I am angry with you. I forgive you for every hurt you caused me.
“I just couldn’t abandon our beautiful boys. I overdosed the boys and when they were asleep I suffocated them.
“I hope you find the strength to go on without us.”
he court has heard Ms Fitchett told her husband in the days before the tragedy that she wanted to leave him and would take the boys with her.
Mr Fitchett told the jury his now ex-wife had loved and nurtured their sons.
Ms Fitchett does not denying drugging and killing her boys but claims she was mentally impaired.
The trial before Justice Elizabeth Curtain continues.
