Donald Trump calls for end of US Constitution

The White House has reacted after Donald Trump called for an end to the US Constitution due to alleged election “fraud”.

Former US president Donald Trump continues to cling to his claim that the 2020 US presidential election was rigged suggesting that a “termination” of the US Constitution is necessary.

Mr Trump continues to harp on debunked conspiracy theories about the 2020 election that he lost to Joe Biden, taking to his social media platform, Truth Social, to declare himself “the rightful winner” of the 2020 presidential election.

He said it was time to “throw out” the 2020 presidential election results or to hold a “new election”.

“A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution,” Mr Trump wrote in a post.

The White House has condemned his comments in a statement.

Andrew Bates, a White House spokesperson, said: “Attacking the constitution and all it stands for is anathema to the soul of our nation and should be universally condemned.”

Mr Bates called the constitution a “sacrosanct document”, saying: “You cannot only love America when you win.”

Mr Trump lost to Joe Biden in 2020 by more than 7 million votes and by 306-232 in the electoral college, a result he called a landslide when it was in his favour in 2016, against Hillary Clinton.

But Mr Trump continues to claim that Mr Biden won key states through electoral fraud, a lie that triggered the deadly riot at the US Capitol by his supporters on 6 January 2021.

Nine deaths have been linked to the attempted insurrection, including suicides among law enforcement officers.

More than 950 people have been charged with offences.

On November 15 Mr Trump announced he would be running again for president in 2024.
