Held against her will in a Darwin hotel room, a woman begged for her captors to let her go as she was repeatedly struck with a baseball bat, a court has heard.

On June 4, Darwin man Delroy-Taylor Sarikon was sentenced in the NT Supreme Court for depriving a person of their personal liberty, serious harm and dishonestly appropriating a mobile phone.

On March 11, 2024, Sarikon and three female associates booked into the Big4 Hidden Valley tourist park in Berrimah.

That evening, Sarikon left with another member of the group, with the remaining two members, including the victim, staying behind to gamble and smoke methamphetamine.

In the early hours of March 12, Sarikon had conspired with co-offender to attack the victim following a dispute over text messages sent to a third party which “enraged” Sarikon.

After refusing to let the woman leave her cabin, Sarikon struck her with a baseball bat.

What followed was a “protracted” and “brutal” assault.

Sarikon struck the victim repeatedly to the head, arms and legs while pacing up and down the room and calling the woman a “s--t”, “dog” and “piece of s--t”.

Sarikon ignored her pleas to be let go.

Justice John Burns noted the woman had been fearful for her safety throughout the ordeal.

“The victim felt she could not try to leave or she would get her head caved in,” he said.

“And you kept walking back and forth and hitting the door while your co-offender was (allegedly) right at the door, ripping the victim’s belongings to pieces, going through her handbag, her cards and ripping the bag.”

Sarikon was arrested at Karama on March 13, where a baseball bat matching the description of the one used in the assault was located.

The woman was heard to have suffered a fractured ulna and radius in her right arm, as well as swelling across her body, arms, legs and throat.

Sarikon, 32, was heard to have spent 73 per cent of his adult life in prison.

The court heard Sarikon had an “extreme” methamphetamine addiction.

Justice Burns noted Sarikon had significant issues with methamphetamine.

“It is suggested that your offending is intimately connected with your extreme methamphetamine addiction,” he said.

The court heard Sarikon came from a background of “extreme disadvantage”.

“While no evidence is before me, I accept that it is probable that your background contributed to your commencement of drug use at an early age,” Justice Burns said.

“Your prospects for rehabilitation are currently poor - you need, as a first step, to address methamphetamine abuse.

Sarikon was sentenced to five years and nine months’ jail, backdated to March 14, 2024.

A non-parole period of three years and six months was imposed.
