Cygnet aim to cement their legacy in 2025 by becoming a dynasty in the SFL

As the 2025 Southern Football League draws even closer, the chance to create another piece of history is motivating Cygnet in pre-season. We go inside the club’s pre-season.

Only two teams in the history of the Southern Football League have won three grand finals in a row – Cygnet (2002-04) and New Norfolk (2012-14).

But Cygnet could now become the first team to do it twice as they look to add a third flag in a row in 2025.

Premiership playing-coach Lachy Watt said there is definitely still plenty of hunger around.

“We have been pretty lucky that we have kept our core group of players over the past few years,” Watt said.

“Pre-season has been pretty good so far, it can be quite difficult to get people to buy in the same amount as they have been so grateful to have sustained success.

“I think there is a good core group among the club who keep driving and making sure we don’t actually drop off too much.

“The possibility to now go for the three-peat, people really want sustained success and a lot of the boys have come from either the juniors from Cygnet where Cygnet went through a tough time.

“A lot of other players have come from the Tigers as well, where the Tigers went through the TSL where we got flogged week in, week out.

“Coming down to Cygnet now, a few of the boys have come from all over, some have come from backgrounds where they didn’t win many games.

“To have the opportunity now to continue winning and continue to be around some of their best mates is I guess is what has been continuing to drive the standards and drive the motivation high.”

Cygnet have won three of the past five grand finals, having gone down in 2020 to Huonville Lions and 2022 to Lindisfarne.

But a third grand final in a row will take the club back in time when they won the SFL Regional premierships defeating Lauderdale in 02 and 03 and Sorell in 04.

“There’s been no real direct talk about but knowing it is something the club has done it before is something that a lot of the playing group strive to get towards,” Watt said.

“A lot of the players had relatives that played in that three-peat, whether that be parents, uncles or grandparents.

“There are a lot of players who have really close connections to players who were in that group and they often come around the club now as well.

“So to be able to try and do something like what they did would be pretty special.”

Cygnet, Huonville and Lindisfarne have been the three clubs who have shared the premierships between them since 2018.

The last time neither of the three sides played in a grand final was in 2015 when Claremont defeated New Norfolk.

“I think the same as the last few years, I think it will Huonville and Lindisfarne up the top again,” Watt said.

“So playing against those two will be a great challenge, it is something we look forward to.

“But I think another up and coming team this year is going to be Sorell.

“We love playing the tough games, we love playing games where we really get challenged.

“Having more teams in the competition who are going to be competing and really putting it up to the top teams is going to be awesome this year.”
