Cruise Industry: Darwin rakes in $4.1 million in one week from passenger arrivals

Darwin’s local economy is counting its cash after 10,000 passengers poured millions into the Top End. Why Tourism Minister Joel Bowden says there is more to come.

The tourism sector is celebrating after $4.1 million was injected into the local economy after eight cruise ships and 10,000 passengers pulled into Darwin this week.

Over seven days, the string of luxury cruise ships docked at Darwin Harbour, including Queen Mary 2, Seabourn Odyssey and the Coral Princess.

Tourism Minister Joel Bowden said the latest success was proof the cruise industry had its sights on the Top End.

“Tourists are saying a visit to Darwin is a must-do trip, and the cruise industry is listening,” he said.

“Darwin has welcomed 10,000 cruise passengers and crew in just one week, injecting a $4.1 million economic boost directly to local shops, restaurants, and tour and transport operators in the Top End.”

Tourism Minister Joel Bowden has announced $4.1 million has been poured into the NT economy in a single week following the arrival of 10,000 cruise passengers.

The fortuitous week follows Mr Bowden’s comments last month, in which the Member for Johnston announced more than 100 cruise and expedition ships were anticipated to pass through Darwin this year.

“The Territory’s cruise industry is going from strength to strength, yielding an estimated $65 million this 2023-24 season, creating jobs for Territorians and supporting our tourism, hospitality and retail businesses.”

Tourism Top End general manager Samantha Bennett said cruise passengers were “delighted” with their stay, with day trips to Litchfield National Park offered as well as city tours, military history tours and jumping crocodile experiences.

“Many visitors to the Tourism Top End Visitor Information Centre expressed their desire to return, indicating that they only scratched the surface of what the territory has to offer,” she said.

“Together, we are not merely welcoming visitors; we are creating lasting impressions, strengthening economic vibrancy, and setting the stage for future adventures.”
