The Cricket Mentoring side got the better of a talented NT Development side to close out a thrilling week of Junior Strike League action.

The winning outfit comprised of plenty young up and comers from interstate who made their way to Darwin for the under-17s tournament.

They elected to bat in the grand final against the hosts with Charlie Mustard (79) and Bayly Stawiarz (95) piling on the early runs.

Their partnership led to a steadying 2-128 and by the time Staiarz was sent packing by the NT’s Riley Suter the side found themselves at a healthy 6-284.

Suter was joined by Noah MacDonald and Dhruv Shandilya in gathering two wickets each for the hosts and seeing Cricket Mentoring out for 331.

Their batters started slowly, but a strong stand between Ralph Stephens (59) and rising star Cadell McMahon (44) gave the outfit hope.

Tye Beer added a further 60 runs off 47 balls late in the piece, and though the side ended all out for 267 it was still the fourth highest innings total of the tournament.

NT Cricket coach Dylan Slater said the tournament had been an awesome opportunity for Territory players, as well as those from interstate.

“It’s been great. It’s an awesome opportunity for the players in Darwin,” Slater said.

“They play senior and junior cricket in the local competition, but for them to come out and play to their strengths against other states is great for them.

“They played really well, obviously a bit of an advantage playing in the Dry Season for us compared to the southern teams, but we played really well,” he said.

“We started the games off well with the ball and then finished off all the hard work with the bat chasing down the runs, which is awesome.”

He also said the Junior Strike League, which included a series of games between the NT and the Victoria Big Cats had been a great chance to show off what Darwin cricket had to offer.

There were six matches between the two sides, with Victoria winning all against an NT outfit that fought hard to make each game as tight as possible.

Sara Burns and Lily-May Lyndon were the standout batters for the Victoria outfit with averages beyond 100, while Elizabeth Johnson stood out with the ball for the NT with best figures of 6/9.

“We got to showcase the dry season and the awesome facilities we have up here in Darwin,” Slater said.

“They really enjoyed it and it’s great for our kids to verse cricketers from down south around their same age level and skill sets as well.”
