Cops bust man allegedly in possession of meth south of Alice Springs during Finke

A court date has been set for a man cops allegedly tested positive for – and was allegedly found with – drugs next to the track of an iconic desert race in the Red Centre.

NT Police said they busted the 57-year-old man on Maryvale Rd, which runs next to the Finke Desert Race track, on Saturday while “conducting traffic duties”.

The man tested positive for drugs, police said, and a search of his car allegedly uncovered 56 grams of methamphetamine.

Police have charged the man, who is believed to be from South Australia, and he remains in custody, awaiting his first court appearance.

He has been charged with driving a motor vehicle while disqualified, driving with a prohibited drug in body, supplying a schedule one commercial quantity of a dangerous drug, and possess a schedule one commercial quantity of a dangerous drug.

He will appear in the Alice Springs Local Court on Tuesday, police said.
