City of Darwin, City of Palmerston prepare for Wet season with pre-cyclone service

Dates and zones have been locked in for the annual pre-cyclone clean-up, with assistance offered to seniors and those with mobility restrictions. Read the full guide.

Darwin residents are being encouraged to take advantage of the council funded pre-cyclone clean-up service, with furniture, whitegoods, mattresses and more permitted to be dumped roadside.

As Top End residents enjoy the last remaining weeks of the Dry season, City of Darwin confirmed dates for the annual pre-cyclone clean-up.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis urged residents to exploit the free service for the benefit of their household.

“Our crews work tirelessly every year to remove hundreds of tonnes of unwanted, and potentially dangerous, items from Darwin residences,” Mr Vatskalis said.

Like last year, Mr Vatskalis said the clean-up would be conducted between two zones.

“The 2024 pre-cyclone clean-up will be divided into two collection zones and eligible items for collection need to be put on the verge during the designated clean-up weekend for each zone,” he said.

“This year we are allocating a specific weekend for residents to put their items on the verge, with collection taking place the following week, allowing plenty of time for the community to be prepared.

“Items added after the zone clean-up weekend dates will not be collected and will be the resident’s responsibility to remove.”

The council stressed that hazardous items, such as glass, mirrors, paints and liquids, would not be collected.

Additionally, seniors and residents with mobility limitations can request assistance by calling 8930 0300 before Friday, September 27, to arrange an assisted pick up.

Zone 1: Saturday, August 31 and Sunday, September 1

Alawa, Anula, Brinkin, Casuarina, Jingili, Karama, Leanyer, Lyons, Malak, Marrara, Moil, Muirhead, Nakara, Tiwi, Wagaman, Wanguri and Wulagi.

Zone 2: Saturday, September 14 and Sunday, September 15

Bayview, Berrimah, Coconut Grove, Cullen Bay, Darwin City, Eaton, East Point, Fannie Bay, Larrakeyah, Ludmilla, Millner, Nightcliff, Parap, Rapid Creek, Stuart Park, The Gardens, The Narrows, Winnellie and Woolner.

City of Palmerston have also confirmed a hard rubbish collection service for the September period, with four zones organised.

Zone 1: Monday, September 9

Marlow Lagoon, Driver and Moulden.

Zone 2: Monday, September 16

Bellamack, Rosebery, Woodroffe and Bakewell.

Zone 3: Monday, September 23

Gray, Gunn, Palmerston CBD and Durack.

Zone 4: Monday, September 30

Johnston, Zuccoli and Farrar.
