BRENTON Jones’ fairytale finish to his glittering professional career came true in the final stage of the Citroen Bay Crits, winning the three-day series on a countback in Geelong.
The retiring champion, who also won the event in 2014, tied on points with stage-two winner Graeme Frislie, but ultimately claimed the overall victory with two stage wins.
Jones said it was the “perfect way” to finish his career.
“Being my last race I wanted to give it absolutely everything, not even last night did I feel nervous or scared I wasn’t going to do it today,” he said.
“I knew I had the win in me, I think that confidence and self-belief has come out late in my career but I knew what I needed to do to get the win, and the team was able to execute perfectly throughout the race.
“It’s an absolute fairytale finish, I couldn’t have scripted it any better if I tried.
“I’m also so proud of Graeme (Frislie) as well, he’s my teammate from last year and he really pushed me the whole series, but for him to come off and really challenge for the win as well is amazing.”
Frislie finished third in the final stage and second overall, overcoming a mid-race crash to claim a podium on the final stage.
He said he was proud of his team for helping him back into the race after his crash.
“I’m still pretty sore from that one, but I was happy to be able to get back into it,” he said.
“It was a little bit (of panic stations), but it happens so fast you can’t really think about it too much.
“I had to get a new front wheel so there was a bit of stress there that I didn’t really need, but I was super happy to be there at the end.”
