She will forever be 21.
Caitlin Rose Thornton was on the verge of a new life when tragedy struck.
On International Women’s Day (March 8, 2023) she was found unconscious in the backyard of a home in Cessnock and was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.
The young mum of two never regained consciousness.
She died three days later on March 11, surrounded by her mother Kylie Bailey, her dad Scott Thornton and her brother Cody.
Police confirmed they were treating the beautician’s death as self-harm.
A NSW Police spokesperson told NewsLocal officers from Hunter Valley Police District attended a home in Cessnock about 8.30pm on March 8 after reports a 21-year-old woman was found unconscious.
“She was taken to John Hunter Hospital, where she died on Saturday, March 11, 2023,” the spokesperson said.
“A crime scene was established at the home and examined by specialist forensic police and an investigation into the incident commenced.
“Initial inquiries suggested the incident was not suspicious and a report was being prepared for the information of the Coroner.”
Caitlin’s mother has refuted any suggestions her daughter ended her own life.
Ms Baily said she was ”advised” by police a coronial hearing was to be held in June.
A NSW Coroner’s Court spokesperson said: “The cause and manner of Caitlin Rose Thornton’s death has not yet been determined by the coroner, and the matter is still before the court.”
“Specialist social workers based at the Coroner’s Court are assisting the family.”
A funeral has not yet been scheduled, but on March 19, family and friends were among 70 locals to attend a memorial at Shoal Bay where flowers were placed in the ocean to commemorate Caitlin’s short life.
The 21-year-old leaves behind two small sons - one just 12 months old and the second 2.5 years old.
Passionately pursuing a career in the beauty industry, Caitlin had gained her lash technician qualification and set up her own business in the weeks before her death.
She was also embarking on life as a single mum.
Kylie Bailey said her daughter was a beautiful soul who adored her children and loved her family.
“She was an absolutely loving mum,” Ms Bailey said.
“She had a great routine for her kids - she really cared about them.
“She would take them to the park every day.
“She was a beautiful mum.”
On a Facebook post announcing Caitlin’s death, many members of the Hunter Valley community shared their sadness and shock.
“My baby girl, you left this world in a way I’d never imagine, your story will be told in time,” her mum said.
“We will forever remind your two babies of the amazing beautiful mother you are.”
Justene Ford said: “May you rest in peace Caitlin - knowing your family will always hold you in their hearts and keep your memory alive.
“Sending so much love.”
Jemahli Adele wrote: “She is no longer in pain - she is at peace and knew she was loved, cherished and admired by so many.”
Phill Margetts wrote “a mother should never outlive their children”.
“Your beautiful daughter is at peace,” he said.
“Anything you need just ask - our hearts are with you.”
Caitlin attended Anna Bay Public School, Tomaree Public and Tomaree High School.
