Warren Entsch invited to speak at COP26 United Nations Climate Conference

Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch has been invited to represent the Great Barrier Reef and his hopes for net zero carbon emissions by 2050 on the world stage next month.

What does net-zero mean for the average Aussie?

SPECIAL envoy to the Great Barrier Reef Warren Entsch will shine a light on the efforts being put into safeguarding our most precious natural asset and his hope that Australia will achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 at an international climate change conference next month.

The Member for Leichhardt was sent an invitation to be a panellist at the COP26 United Nations Climate Conference and is hoping to attend from November 7-18.

Mr Entsch said he felt privileged to be able to take the Reef and efforts to preserve it to the world.

He congratulated the Cairns Post and News Corp on their Mission Zero campaign, which launched Monday, examining the pathways Australia can take to reach the global target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

“We are certainly stepping up and we should be sharing this, showing the work we are doing in the Reef, reaching out to other countries to highlight that we need to lead by example,” he said.

“I will be speaking about the Reef, about the fabulous work we are doing here and the reason why we need to commit to a 2050 target of zero.”

Mr Entsch said Mission Zero would be important in sparking the push for a national conversation around net zero but would like to see more targets set for 2030.

“I think it is very positive and I support the role absolutely,” Mr Entsch said.

“It is a serious issue and it’s an issue that we need to address for the economic future of our region and the environmental future of our Reef and our forest.

“We need to do both. We can’t leave some sections of the Australian community behind and we don’t need to.”

“I think we can reach net zero by 2050 but we can do it easily.”

Mr Entsch, who has approval for hotel quarantine upon his return, has applied to the state government to isolate at home instead.

He said he felt it was inappropriate to take a place in hotel quarantine for such a short trip, when so many Australians had been waiting long periods of time to return home.

“I get a lot of horror stories of people who are stuck outside of Queensland who are stuck in other states that aren’t home, let alone those stuck overseas.”

Mr Entsch said that if he was unsuccessful, he would try to fly into the ACT and quarantine there.
