A schoolgirl has been left with serious facial injuries after she was punched multiple times in the face while heading home on a bus in Far North Queensland, in an unprovoked attack.

Police allege a 17-year-old school student, on her way home at 3.15pm on Monday, March 17, was seated near the front of a bus in an aisle seat when she was assaulted by another teenager.

Authorities said a 16-year-old was another passenger on the bus when she punched the older girl in the face twice as she walked down the aisle to exit the bus.

The 17-year-old sustained serious facial injuries and required medical treatment.

Cairns Child Protection Investigation Unit detectives have since charged the 16-year-old girl with one count of assault occasioning bodily harm.

It is further alleged the girl stole a drink from a Parramatta Park service station earlier in the week.

She is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Children’s Court on Friday, March 21.
