A deployment of specialist fly-in-fly-out police officers has returned to Cairns to undertake bail checks, execute arrest warrants and get known offenders off the street.
The Queensland Police Service rapid response unit, known as the State Flying Squad, supported by Far North District officers has charged 146 people with 496 offences during a seven-day sting that finished up on May 15.
Attached to Cairns Property Crime Unit, the Cairns CIB, Cairns Child Protection and Investigation Unit and Cairns Tactical Crime Squad the collaboration busted 86 young people who were charged with various property offences including car theft, break and enter and stealing.
A standout arrest came on May 11 when officers from the Cairns Tactical Crime Squad used stingers on a Toyota HiLux allegedly stolen from an Aeroglen property on May 1.
Both front tyres came off the vehicle with the man allegedly continuing to drive the four-wheel-drive on rims only along the Captain Cook Highway at speeds exceeding 100km/h.
The vehicle continued into Holloways Beach where the man allegedly dumped the vehicle and attempted to flee before being apprehended by officers.
The man was charged with one count each of dangerous operation of a vehicle with prior conviction, unlawful use of motor vehicle, drug driving, and unlicensed driving.
Far North District Superintendent Kevin Fitzgibbon said the State Flying Squad is a valuable addition to local officers cracking down on crime in the region.
“This surge capacity allows us to target high-risk offenders, and deploy officers to hotspot areas as required,” he said.
“Our top priority is ensuring the community is, and feels safe, and we are continuing to take a zero-tolerance approach to serious repeat offenders causing harm.”
Since April, police have charged 505 people with 1568 offences as part of State Flying Squad deployments to the Far North.
